Shiva Acharya’s 2-Spirit HIV Warrior Treatment Support Bursary is sponsored by Shiva Acharya, Lead Researcher and Policy Analyst at the 2-Spirited People of the 1st Nations. With over 25 years of experience, Shiva has dedicated his career to protecting and promoting the rights of communities impacted by HIV/AIDS and STBBI, including people living with HIV, people who use drugs, children affected by AIDS, and queer and gender-diverse communities across Nepal, Canada and several Southeast Asian countries.

Shiva has conducted numerous intervention research and presented at different forums in Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, India, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Nepal, Rwanda, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, and the United States. His research interests focus on HIV/AIDS, STBBI, addiction, mental health, drug policies, Indigenous culture and ceremonies, and traditional healing methods.

In 2022, Shiva was awarded the Community Research Fellowship at the Feast Centre for Indigenous STBBI Research at McMaster University. He is pursuing his PhD in Rural and Northern Health at the School of Kinesiology and Health Sciences, Laurentian University. His dissertation explores the role of Indigenous sacred traditional medicine and land-based ceremonies in enhancing treatment outcomes among the 2-Spirits and Indigenous people living with HIV in Northern Ontario. Established in 2022, the objective of this bursary has been to encourage and support Indigenous people living with HIV to maintain their HIV treatment adherence, as well as to provide them with opportunities to access the support and resources necessary to enhance their treatment journey. This bursary is open to all Two-Spirited, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit folks living with HIV who are currently residing in Ontario and undergoing HIV treatment. This bursary aims to provide support and empowerment to recipients as they navigate their treatment journey.
